Background of the Study
Mobile financial services have transformed the landscape of rural banking by providing accessible and cost-effective solutions for financial transactions. Union Bank of Nigeria has been instrumental in deploying mobile financial services to enhance agricultural productivity in rural areas. These services include mobile money transfers, digital loan applications, and realtime financial advisory support, all of which enable farmers to manage their finances more efficiently (Adams, 2023). By leveraging mobile technology, the bank not only facilitates immediate access to credit but also empowers farmers with timely market information and agricultural best practices, thereby enhancing overall productivity.
The integration of mobile services in rural agriculture has several advantages. It reduces the need for physical branch visits, lowers transaction costs, and provides a platform for financial inclusion among underserved populations. Mobile financial services also enable the collection of data on farming activities, which can be used to tailor financial products to the specific needs of rural farmers (Ogunleye, 2024). Furthermore, these digital tools foster a more direct relationship between the bank and its clients, improving customer trust and promoting sustained engagement. As rural areas experience gradual improvements in mobile network connectivity, the potential for mobile financial services to boost agricultural productivity becomes increasingly significant (Ibrahim, 2025).
Despite these promising developments, challenges remain. Many rural farmers face low digital literacy, which limits the effective use of mobile banking applications. Additionally, inconsistent network coverage and concerns about transaction security further impede widespread adoption. These issues contribute to an uneven impact on agricultural productivity and hinder the bank’s efforts to achieve full financial inclusion. This study examines the impact of mobile financial services on rural agricultural productivity at Union Bank of Nigeria, aiming to assess how digital solutions influence loan uptake, production investment, and overall agricultural performance, while identifying key areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Although mobile financial services have the potential to transform rural agricultural productivity, their impact in many areas remains suboptimal due to several persistent challenges. A primary problem is the low level of digital literacy among rural farmers, which hinders the effective utilization of mobile banking applications and limits access to financial services (Olatunde, 2023). Inadequate network connectivity and intermittent power supply further disrupt the reliability of mobile services, reducing customer confidence and limiting the frequency of digital transactions. These infrastructural constraints result in delayed loan disbursements and inefficient financial management, ultimately affecting agricultural investment and productivity.
Moreover, concerns regarding data security and the complexity of user interfaces discourage many farmers from adopting mobile financial services fully. The absence of comprehensive training and support further exacerbates these issues, leading to underutilization of available digital platforms. Consequently, despite the bank’s initiatives to promote mobile financial services, the full benefits of increased financial inclusion and enhanced agricultural productivity are not realized. This study seeks to investigate these challenges by evaluating the effect of mobile financial services on rural agricultural productivity, identifying key obstacles, and proposing strategies to improve service delivery and user engagement.
